Every image command resolves its target the same way, checked in order: an image you attach directly, an image embedded in the message you're replying to, an image link right in your message text, and finally — if none of those are present — your own avatar. That means .grayscale with nothing attached just grayscales your profile picture, which is often exactly what people want anyway.
